Brookside

Brookside is located adjacent to the Whitemud Creek Ravine, in an area annexed to the City of
Edmonton in 1960. In 1961 the area was included in a plan for the phased development of the
Riverbend portion of southwest Edmonton, and in 1969 Brookside was included in the RiverbendTerwillegar Heights Outline Plan. Riverbend-Terwillegar Heights was the first of Edmonton’s residential areas to be planned on such a large scale.

The Brookside neighbourhood had a subdivision re-plot in 1968 and quickly developed afterwards. Approximately half of the neighbourhood’s residential units were completed before 1970, and almost all the units were completed by 1980. Brookside is predominantly an area of single-detached homes on larger lots, although there are some apartments and row housing homes located north of 53rd Avenue.

The neighbourhood is bordered by the Whitemud Freeway to the west, which provides access to
a number of commercial and employment centres throughout the city. The junction of the freeway
and 53rd Avenue provides the only regularly used access point into Brookside. Brookside’s
educational and recreational facilities are located north of 53rd Avenue.

A number of pathways, including the open space of a pipeline right-of-way south of 56th Avenue, promote pedestrian and bicycle movement through the neighbourhood. As well, the nearby ravine offers good access to the River Valley parks and trails. The neighbourhood name is an indirect reference to its location adjacent to Whitemud Creek.
